San Francisco and the Sexual Revolution:
Part 1: 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM

The Bi Movement & San Francisco Sex Information (SFSI).

Maggi Rubenstein, Ph.D., ACS, IASHS Dean of Students Emeritus, San Francisco

Maggi Rubenstein was one of the San Francisco activists who helped to fashion the “sexual revolution” of the 1960s and 1970s in her home town of San Francisco. “She first came out as a bisexual in her early thirties while working at the Center for Special Problems, an agency that works with a variety of clients, including sexual minority groups. She credited the women's movement as giving her the sense of strength and courage to come out as bisexual. Her personal odyssey for others who could validate her sexual and emotional feelings for both sexes, and the "immense sense of relief" that she felt when she found other self-identified bisexuals, led her to conceive of "a community center for bisexual people so that others would not have to struggle alone" (Rubenstein,1983). The vision of starting a bisexual organization that would counter the lack of visibility of bisexually identified women and men began years before the actual founding of the Bisexual Center. Rubenstein left the Center for Special Problems in 1972. Her activities over the next few years helped her to consolidate a core of bisexually supportive friends and acquaintances who would assist in realizing the dream of a bisexual community center. In 1972, Rubenstein helped to found the San Francisco Sex Information hotline (a switchboard where the public could call in and get clear, non-judgmental information about sexuality) with Margo Rila. She also assisted in beginning the University of California Medical Center's program in sex counseling, and … served as a member of the founding faculty of the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality, which was founded in 1976.” (Jay P. Paul, “San Francisco’s Bisexual Center and the Emergence of a Bisexual Movement” … See: http://www2.hu-berlin.de/sexology/BIB/bicent.htm).

A Deeper Shade of Pink: Sexual Health in Women with Breast Cancer
Sueann Mark, Ph.D., ACS

While every woman’s journey through breast cancer is different, most will experience some disruption in their sex lives during treatment and many face a loss of sexual interest, sexual dysfunction, or decreased sexual satisfaction throughout survivorship. These women are left with little or no support for their sexual concerns because discussions about sexual health are largely ignored within the medical setting. This presentation will give you the background necessary to work knowledgeably with women at any stage of breast cancer treatment from the newly diagnosed to long-term survivors. Using a multi-dimensional focus that includes the mind, body, and spirit, we will examine the four most common breast cancer treatments … chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, and anti-hormonal treatments, illuminating the sexual repercussions associated with each. Particular attention will paid to distinguishing between the experiences of pre- and post-menopausal women with breast cancer.

Sueann Mark, Ph.D. is a clinical sexologist in private practice in San Francisco and a breast cancer survivor. Dr. Mark is board certified by the American College of Sexologists and serves on the faculty of the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality. Divas of San Francisco: Portraits of Transsexual Women

David Steinberg

On January 16, 2008, David Steinberg announced the publication of a new book of his photographs, Divas of San Francisco: Portraits of Transsexual Women. It is his first new book since Photo Sex: Fine Art Sexual Photography Comes of Age was published in 2003, and the first book that is exclusively made up of his own photography. In his own words … “Divas of San Francisco is a collection of 59 full-page color portraits of transsexual women--dancers, bartenders, lip-sync performers, disc jockeys, regulars and visitors I have met during years of frequenting Divas Nightclub and Bar, the most prominent transgender club in the U.S. These intimate portraits are an attempt on my part to honestly portray the individuality, diversity and fierce integrity of a remarkable group of women who are alternately ignored, stereotyped and fetishized, but rarely acknowledged and appreciated for who they really are. I believe these photographs reach beneath an often glamorous surface to present a unique group of women in their true complexity -- their joy, sadness, strength, uncertainty, toughness, vulnerability and, most of all, their courage in embracing the core of who they know themselves to be in the face of a misunderstanding, frightened, and often hostile world.” In this presentation David will present the images included in this book, and discuss, from his unique perspective, the process and implications of this work. David will have copies of his book available and will sign them for you following his presentation. He has also offered to escort interested students to Divas this evening following graduation for a field trip.

David Steinberg is a photographer, author, editor, and publisher. His previous books include Photo Sex: Fine Art Sexual Photography Comes of Age; Erotic by Nature: A Celebration of Life, of Love, and of Our Wonderful Bodies; The Erotic Impulse: Honoring the Sensual Self; and Fatherjournal: Five Years of Awakening to Fatherhood.

Boys to Men: The Masculine Code and Dispirited Sexuality

Clinton Joyce Jesser, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois

In this program Professor Jesser will address three issues that will be of interest to attendees. He will first provide background information that one would not find in his published articles concerning his research on the following topics … nudity in the art training process, breast attention, direct verbal sexual initiatives of females, and the courtship game. In the second part of this session he will address issues that emerged in the research and writing associated with his pioneering book, Fierce and Tender Men: Sociological Aspects of the Men’s Movement. This book has been described as … "critical, analytical, and inspirational … drawing on current research in gender, on student’s views in gender classes, and on the author’s own experience and in his participation in men’s work over a period of eight years. The book confronts, but does not scapegoat, men." Finally Dr. Jesser will address men’s groups and the potential associated with this work.

Clinton J. Jesser is a Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Northern Illinois University where he was co-founder of the women Studies Program and co-founder of DeKalb’s women’s shelter. Dr. Jesser has been a teacher / researcher and writer in the area of sex and gender for more than 30 years. He has participated in men’s work, especially the New Warrior Network and 12-step groups, the past 15 years.

It Starts in the Womb: Understanding Infant / Child Sexuality

Remi Newman, M.A., Sexuality Educator, Santa Rosa, California

Our earliest interactions with our infants set the stage for their future intimate relationships. Although most parents wish to be the primary sexuality educators for their children, many are confused about when and how to begin. "Having the talk before they can talk" is a sexuality education workshop created by the lecturer to help parents participate in their child’s healthy sexual development from the beginning. While parents are waiting to have "the talk" with their kids, they have lost years of opportunities to nurture a healthy sexuality in their children. This lack of family sexuality education contributes to unhealthy sexual identity development which in turn results in a variety of societal ills including high rates of STIs, unwanted pregnancies, sexual abuse, low sexual self-esteem, and the inability to achieve intimacy. Lecture attendees will gain knowledge of infant/child sexuality and have the opportunity to explore their own values around the subject by participating in the workshop activities.

Remi Newman has a master’s degree in sexuality education from New York University and over seven years of experience developing and facilitating sexuality education workshops on a variety of topics, including healthy sexuality for women in recovery, working with GLBT youth, safer anal sex, and healthy sexuality for people living with HIV. She is also the proud mother of 14 month old Leo, her inspiration for the workshop.
